Gali Ali Beg • گەلی علی بەگ • شلال كلي علي
This spot is famously shown on the 5,000 dinar Iraqi note. It is named after a Yezidi leader Ali Beg who was summonsed to meet the Kurdish Islamic Emir of Soran and was executed here by him.
Today this treasured site is overwhelmingly busy during summer months with tourists arriving from Baghdad and the rest of Iraq. The decorations are very cheesy, but going up next to the charging waters still stirs feelings of awe.
Capitalist efforts have resulted in a restaurant, parking lot, channelized river section, and various other anthropogenic "improvements" of varying kitsch and convenience.
