Church of Saint George • كهنيسهى مار گۆرگیس • كنیسة مار كوركيس
This is the oldest Chaldean Catholic church in Ankawa, dedicated to Saint George. He was a Sassanian prince named Maherkoushap born 576 CE and baptised 596 CE. Saint George was a monk at Mount Izla until the Sassanian king discovered his conversion, having him arrested and murdered in 615. His feast day is 24 April and celebrated at the church. Some parts may date earlier, but renovations in 1995 found a stone inscription dating the church to 816. Another stone mentioned a Father Hormuz who died there in 917, and referred to Ankawa as Amku.
