Avzrog • أفزروك
Avzrog has two neighbourhoods: Avzrog Miri is Armenian, and Avzrog Sheno is Assyrian. The Armenians speak Kurdish, but retain their Armenian customs. Avzrog means 'golden water' in Kurdish.
It was founded in 1932 by Armenians from Zakho who decided to establish and settle it. In 1975, Saddam's Arabization policy had the village destroyed and repopulated with Arabs.
But in 1991, when the KR retook control the Arab tribes fled back to their homelands (mainly south of Mosul). The church was rebuilt. Today it has a population of about 300 people.
