Bekhme Dam is an unfinished dam on the Greater Zab in Surchi subdistrict. If finished, it has a potential capacity of 17.1 billion cubic meters. Construction began in the late 1980s but halted in after the Gulf War, when it was subsequently looted by local Kurds. It will increase irrigable area by 565,000 hectares and maximum release through spillways by flood routing controlled to 8,000 m3 per second with an installed capacity of 1,500 MW generating electricity for Erbil.
