Church of the Heart of Jesus (Sinjar) • كنيسة قلب يسوع الاقدس للسريان الكاثوليك
This majestic Syriac Catholic cathedral is built of stone and appears very old. It remains standing and almost totally structurally intact, following the war with the Islamic State. The altar was exploded and all accoutrements and furnishings are missing inside, but there are still some inscriptions. A room adjacent to the church has a tunnel dug by the Islamic State into a neighboring villa. That villa served as an Islamic State base of some sort, and may have been positioned there as a tactic that assumed airstrikes would be less likely if they could damage important heritage sites.
