Serving as the center for the Garmian Administration, this district is relatively young. Kalar was a village until the 1960s, but in 1970 the Iraqi government made an administrative order to upgrade Kalar from village to the district and ever since the populations of Kalar town has grown dramatically. After the 1991, Kurdish uprising, Kalar have governed by the KRG recently the KRP have decided to designate separate budgets for Garmeyan, which Kalar is a center for this region (known as Garmeyan Administration). Kalar region is vital to the KR economy, farming are the main sources of income for local citizens especially wheat’s and vegetables.
