Spilik cave

Ishkaft Spilik is some 6 miles northwest of Shaqlawah in full view across a wadi from the Shaqlawah-Erbil road.

The shelter faces north and is protected by ridges in a bend of the wadi. Its breadth is about 15 meters and it extends into the rock about 8 meters, though two narrow flanking chambers extended 8 meters deeper. It contains a thick layer of animal dung and debris with a small handful of recent potsherds. Beneath this, Braidwood and Howe found a horizon of Mousterian type flint flake tools, like those from Hazar Merd. Braidwood and Howe recorded its name as Ishkaft Spilik, using the Persian اشکفت eshkaft for cave.
