It was built in the 1930s by architect Mardan Asta, with artists Izzat Ismael Ikhwani Al Karkuki designing details of the balcony, ceiling, and roof. It was renovated in 2013-2015.
Now owned by the government, there are folkloric shops and a Kurdish culture museum with dioramas of traditional life, and one piece each from the Christian and Jewish communities.
