Manal al-Sharif

Manal is a Saudi Arabian women’s rights activist who began her campaign for women’s right to drive in 2011. As part of her campaign, she had a friend film her driving a car which lead to her detention as it was posted on social media.

After being released, Manal also campaigned on the rights of Saudi, Indonesian and Filipino prisoners who “are locked up just because they owe a small sum of money but cannot afford to pay the debt” according to her. Foreign Policy magazine named Manal one of the Top 100 thinkers in 2011. In 2012, she was named as one of the most Fearless Women of the year by The Daily Beast.
