Exodus 20:8-11 and Deuteronomy 5:12-15

Exodus 20:8-11

Deuteronomy 5:12-15

Exegesis

Remember the Shabbat day, to sanctify it.

Guard the Shabbat day, to sanctify it,

...

as Adonai your G-d has commanded.

Six days you will work and do all of your labor.

Six days you will work and do all of your labor.

The seventh day is a Sabbath for Adonai your G-d.

The seventh day is a Sabbath for Adonai your G-d.

Don't do any labor on it,

Don't do any labor on it,

neither you nor your sons or daughters,

neither you nor your sons or daughters,

There is indeed no comma in the Hebrew from Deuteronomy.

your servants,

your servants,

your animals,

your bulls or donkeys or any of your animals,

or the strangers who reside within your gates,

nor the strangers who reside within your gates,

...

in order that your servants shall rest as you do.

In six days G-d made Heaven and Earth, the Sea and all that dwell in it, and G-d rested on the seventh day. On account of that, G-d blessed the Shabbat day and set it apart.

כִּי שֵׁשֶׁת-יָמִים עָשָׂה יְהוָה אֶת-הַשָּׁמַיִם וְאֶת-הָאָרֶץ, אֶת-הַיָּם וְאֶת-כָּל-אֲשֶׁר-בָּם, וַיָּנַח, בַּיּוֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִי; עַל-כֵּן, בֵּרַךְ יְהוָה אֶת-יוֹם הַשַּׁבָּת--וַיְקַדְּשֵׁהוּ. {ס}

...

...

Remember that you were a slave in the Land of Egypt, and that Adonai your G-d took you out of there with a strong hand and outstretched arm, that is why Adonai your G-d has commanded you to make Shabbat.
