Kengir, sisi • کنگر، سسی

Spelled either کەنگر or کنگر in Kurdish, kanger is an important species in West Asia, known internationally as Gundelia tournefortii. This plant is associated with Jesus' crown of thorns.

The young kanger plant is eaten as a very popular and traditional Kurdish food for springtime. Year round, its seeds are enjoyed like sunflower seeds (roasted and served dry as a snack), which are known as سسی (sisi) locally.
