Hamayil-khan Mahmoud Agha Zebari Barzani was pivotal in the Kurdish struggle against tyranny and oppression. From the 1940s, she was a staunch adherent to the cause of democracy for the Kurdish people alongside her husband, General Mustafa Barzani and her son, President Massoud Barzani.
Through decades of upheaval she made many sacrifices, was put under house arrest, was displaced from her home several times, and became a major decision-maker while her husband was in Russian exile.
