Speaking of the route from Sandur to Baski,
We were now in the bosom of the mountains, surrounded by an awful solitude, and the finest and sublimest scenery. We passed several secluded villages, but oppression and tyranny had driven the inhabitants from their genial climes, to seek shelter in the more inaccessible mountain districts. Stern (1848), p 115
