Tawakkol Karman

Born in 1979, Tawakkol is a Yemeni human rights activist, journalist and politician. She became an international public figure following the 2011 Arab Spring which including uprisings in Yemen. She co-founded the group “Women Journalists Without Chains” in 2005 advocating for press freedom and women's rights. She has also fought against child marriage. In 2011, Tawakkol was a co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, making her the first Yemeni, the second Muslim woman and the second youngest Nobel Peace Laureate to win.
