Kalek (subdistrict) • کەڵەک • قلق • Kełek

This town is named for the 'kalek' used to cross the river here. A kalek was made by taking a fresh sheepskin or goatskin, sealing the openings, and inflating it like a balloon.

A dry kalek was cheap and waterproof, and floated. They could be strung together into rafts, either for transport or (when overlaid with boards) served as effective but easily washed-away bridges.
