Berta Cáceres

Berta was born on March 4, 1971 and is Lenca, one of the indigenous groups of Honduras. She was a human rights activist for indigenous people, LGBT rights, and feminism. As a student activist she created the Council of Popular Indigenous Organizations of Honduras (COPINH). She was inspired by her mother Austra Lopez, a humanitarian who helped refugees from El Salvador and mayor of their hometown. Berta was assassinated for her human rights work on March 2, 2016.
