Ayshe Shan Nemir (Eyşe Şan Nemir) • عائیشه‌ شان

Known as the “queen without a crown”, Ayshe was a Kurdish singer born in Diyarbakir, Turkey in 1938. She is considered as a legend in contemporary Kurdish music. She initially began her career producing songs in Turkish but recorded her first album in Kurdish when she moved to Istanbul in 1960.

Due to political pressure of artists performing in Kurdish, she immigrated to Germany in 1976. Ayshe was able to meet with other Kurdish artists on her visit to Iraqi Kurdistan in 1976. Although she died from cancer in 1996, she is still considered an icon to Kurdish musicians.
